Young Entrepreneurs, learn from Fashek’s Saga…

Just last week, while I was relaxing on my bed; I decided to listen to a radio program called CHAT HOUR by Olayemi Ogunwole popularly called Honeypot on Radio Continental in the evening after long work day. There I heard the presenter talking about Majek Fashek, the Reggae hero of early 80s and 90s. I couldn’t believe what I heard about this enigma… who is now insane! What a pathetic story indeed you may conclude to say; just like I did! But there are a few lesson I will want the young entrepreneurs like I, of these days should pick from these.youth

In the course of this write-up I will be sharing a brief biography of this great man called Majek Fashek who is now today an eyesore, for those who want to know who he really is.

I have come to realize that some entrepreneurs find it difficult to given back to the society after a few achievements; may be they see entrepreneurship as “a one man show….” It is often said “When purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable”. A great entrepreneur, Richard Branson said and I quote “Innovation is an endless quest-very few products are so good that they cannot be continually improved upon…” So many entrepreneurs do not have a long term goal for their growing business or rather do not see the any future in the business they so. One of my good friends, Kehinde John Olagbenjo KJO writes these:KJO

The benefit of entrepreneurship development in any nation cannot be overemphasized.

  1. They reduce the rate of unemployment and provide jobs to the people.
  2. They also help the economy of any nation to grow and flourish.
  3. The wealth of a nation depends on the wealth of their entrepreneurs; more wealth will be created for the people.

Inclusion, he said we need more entrepreneurs for the economy of Nigeria to grow!

I strongly believe in what KJO said there because no Nation grows with the empowerment of its people!

Here is the story of our one time reggae hero Majek Fashek:

Fashek was born in Benin City, Nigeria to an Edo mother and a Yoruba father. Majekodunmi Fasheke, popularly known as Majek Fashek, is a Nigerian Reggae singer and Guitarist. Various translations of his name Fasheke (Ifa-kii-she-eke) include “high priest who does not lie”, “powers of miracles” and “(system or medium of) divination does not lie”

Fashek first gained national fame on a television show in the early 1980s as a member of Benin-based reggae group Jastix. His band mates included Ras Kimono and Amos McRoy Gregg. They toured for many years with fellow reggae group The Mandators. In 1988, shortly after Jastix disbanded, he began a solo career and quickly became the best-known reggae artist in Nigeria. His song “Send down the Rain” was a hit, and he won six US-based PMAN Music Awards.Majek-Fashek

Fashek is one of the increasing number of African artists to be drawn to the music of the Caribbean, specifically reggae, rather than indigenous hybrids such as Fuji, juju or high life high. Having grown up in a fervently religious and musical family, he was exposed to the imported sounds of Bob Marley at an early age, alongside the innovations of local stars such as Fela Kuti.

However, it is a pity to know how the mighty are really falling and the weapon of war perish in the hands through careless, non-focus, involving in drugs and all worth not! This great legend has become something else now…

Despite all effort to reinvigorate the dwelling career of this reggae legend, Majek Fashek, it’s obvious that he needs serious attention spiritually and otherwise.

Recently, the living but half dead reggae legend was sighted staggering and murmuring some inaudible at Ogba area of Lagos. Veteran reggae artist, Majek, no doubt is now a shadow of his former self, the once handsome looking, bubbling fellow is now in a pitiable condition.

He is now mentally unstable and sources say he is already in rehab but from a recent report, the ‘Send Down the Rain’ crooner is not getting any better. A source informed http://www.nigeriafilms.com that he was spotted last Friday 12th June, 2015 at Ogba, Ikeja Lagos clutching his guitar, staggering with a cigarette in his mouth, murmuring incoherent words. Though, he resides at Gowon Estate of Egbeda area of Lagos, his mission at Ogba was not known. (Nigeria flims.com)mdpix

What a mystery that a man of his caliber would turn into a mockery in the same society he has been celebrated! I remember a quote my boss, Stephen Akintayo shared with me in the course of starting my Media career what his own mentor, Bishop David Oyedepo shared with his mentees:

When a football star refuses to retire to become a couch; he will soon pay to enter the same stadium others pay to watch him played. But if he does retires to become a couch, when the next reigning stars see him; they will point to him and say ’couchy!’ With this; he will not lose relevance”

This is what I can say happened to Majek Fashek, when he was in his early morning time ,reigning as a star he did take into consideration the legacy he want to leave… I am not judging him but this is just a lesson that any reigning stars in any field of career: music, business, etc. can learn from. Be wise; don’t allow anything you that you cannot do without to get into you just because of little or achievement. Remember that a habit become a character; and a character an attitude. African-youth-meeting

Of course anything that is an attitude can either make or mar a destiny! It has been proven that attitude is 100% of your life (A-1, T-20, T-20, I-9, T-20, U-21, D-4, E-5)

Truly, skill takes people to the top but character maintains it for them.
